True/False Math Challenger is a very important program in the Soft-Pak because it develops math fact mastery rapidly with regular use. T/F Math uses a unique method to practice math fact sets 1-12 in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Each item is presented as either TRUE (4 x 5 = 20) or FALSE (8 + 7 = 14). The student must determine either T or F and click the appropriate button. Activities may be TIMED or UNTIMED. The goal is for the student to progress to the TIMED option and master the math facts so thoroughly that even under the pressure of time, the answers can be quickly inputted. Originally, the student should use the untimed, less pressure method to practice. Students rapidly master all math facts with this program and additionally, they form visual mental pictures of correct math facts (8 x 9 = 72) so that when confronted with these problems later, they immediately can "see" the answer. Very effective.
In this partial screen shot below, the student must click either T or F to answer the items displayed either in a timed or untimed activity. While most of the T/F activities present just one T or F math "fact," this particular one increases the difficulty level in that the student must determine if the statement in the LEFT COLUMN equals the statement in the RIGHT COLUMN - thus 2 determinations must be made before either T or F is clicked. As the student progresses down the column, the T and F buttons follow for each item. Rapid math fact mastery is acquired using these activities. Other activities include racing, baseball, beating the clock etc. and there is the option to compete against another player or team for motivational purposes.
The partial screen shot below shows a special feature which allows the student to select any math fact set for study (in this case, multiplication of 8's). Any set may be used, from adding 1's through 12's to dividing by 12. This allows for study before trying the math fact set in the activity. For example, the largest numbers allowed can be 6, 9, or 12 so younger children can work on 1-6 until mastered in any of the 4 areas (+, -, x, /), then move up to 1-9, and finally up to 1-12. After a fairly short period, all facts are committed to memory.
T/F Math also allows printables so that students may work on paper while the computer is in use. All on screen session scores are recorded and may be printed for each session for recordkeeping.
