L. A. Master covers spelling, reading, punctuation, writing mechanics, usage, and the basics of grammar (parts of speech, subjects/verbs, phrases and clauses, and sentence structure) in a non-threatening, easy to use format. Students are shown examples and explanations and then can try each activity. Scores are recorded and session summaries may be printed as needed. L. A. Master also offers printable activities with answer keys so that each child can work at the same time (one on screen and others on paper, then each child can switch positions). Four examples (out of many possible options) are displayed below to illustrate how L. A. Master works.
This partial screen shot below shows the activity selection page for L. A. Master. The student may choose to work on spelling and reading of the 4000 plus words already included (categorized by master lists of similar words and placed in groups of 20). In addition, there are reading exercises for speed, comprehension, and oral work, plus usage (their, there, they're etc), writing mechanics corrections, and non-threatening grammar options that both explain the process and offer exercises for practice.
This partial screen shot below of the PARTS OF SPEECH option shows the sentence with a CAPITALIZED word that must be identified in terms of its part of speech. The student then clicks the appropriate button (in this case, ADJECTIVE because "exact" describes the noun "instructions" and adjectives modify nouns and pronouns). There is a Definitions/Examples option that explains each part of speech and gives examples.
This partial screen shot shows the Definitions and Examples option for ADJECTIVES. Each part of speech can be selected.
This partial screen shot below of the WRITING CORRECTIONS option shows a sentence with writing errors that must be corrected. Notice that the apostrophe in "leave's is wrong and "Tom's" needs to be capitalized. Spelling, usage (their, there, they're etc), capitalization, and punctuation errors must be found and fixed. Some sentences have no errors and the student must recognize that and click a button that indicates no errors. This forces the student to be positive about each error before entering any corrections.
L. A. Master includes over 4000 words, grouped by category and presented in sets of 20 words for spelling and reading work. You may also use Test Maker to add your own PERSONAL WORD LISTS if you wish. This option greatly expands L. A. Master's usefulness because it can work with word lists that your child is working on in another curriculum. Each child can have his or her own personal master list to work with. Adding the word lists is very simple and quick. The 4000 plus words that are already included range from very simple sight words to specific types ("long a" sounds, "ph" sounds, for example).
The partial screen shot below of SPELLING/READING shows one of the master lists (Special Words) with some of the 36 word lists (20 words in each) to select from for spelling or oral reading work. Notice the Personal Word Lists option that may be selected as well.
